TREKKING ALLARO

The course of the river is characterized by a huge rocky spur on which is built the hermitage of Eremo Sant’Ilarione. Along the way you will encounter an old mill and an abandoned house called Pampinti. Trekking the river, there is no real path as the rivers course is continually modified by the enormous boulders held within the river walls, transported by the fury of the floodwaters.

The trail follows the path of the river, crossing the water where necessary, mostly in shallow water, but at times the water can be deeper. You come across large polished boulders along the way which make for a good resting spot. Noteworthy, is the aqueduct built by the monks that used to bring water from way up the river, at times suspended on the mountain side, to the town of Prisa, but today it is abandoned in most locations, except where it is in use close to the Hermitage.

For the adventurous with outdoor river climbing experience this trip will be a thrill and have lasting memories for you.  If you are not so adventurous, then the trek can stop at any point along the way, typically about two hours into the adventure.  The first half of the trek is relatively easy with then latter half being a challenge to most people.  You choose what type of experience you are after and let us know.
