Fiumara Vacale, Villaggio Cernatali – Cittanova

The Vacale River is considered the beach of the city; in fact it is very popular in summer and other seasons. The excursion is also interesting from a naturalistic and landscape view as well as the ancient shrubs in this area that were used to help channel the river water for milling olives. Along the trek are river crossings and pools of water for you to cool off in.

A long way up the river bed you will encounter a great wall used to control the raging river waters. On the uphill side lies a steep mountain pathway to the remote village of shepherds in Cernatali. Still inhabited the short steep climb up the mountain side brings you back in time when living off the land was all one could do to sustain themselves. Be sure to drink the ever fresh cool mountain water joshing right from the source.

The white granite riverbed stones and boulders have been moved by the torrent of water during heavy rainfalls. Over the years they have been dragged, thrown, and shaped as you see them today. The riparian vegetation is predominantly made up of alder but you can admire a beautiful cork oak tree along certain areas of the river bank. As you climb the slopes lichen with spruce and heather at ground level are dominated by the holm oak tree forest.

On the way back be sure to cool yourself in the rivers waterfall and bathing pool. We ascend an old path that runs along the ancient chapel of Santa Maria della Catena, next to which a stair stone marked the distance between Locri Epizefiri and the colonies of Medma Fosarno and Hirotonion Metauro. Tired, but satisfied, you will be content and joyful at the finish of this trek.
