AGNANA – NATURA,TERME, GROTTE
This walking trip begins in the hills above Siderno Superiore and below Agnana, at the Acque termali salso-iodiche (hot salt and iodine water) in a land of olive groves and fields. Agnana is a small mountain village of terraced houses that overlooks the Ionian Sea. From the thermal the old road leads uphill towards Agnana, passing fields of olives, fig trees, grape vines and rural gardens.
Breathe the fresh mountain air as you slowly make your way to Agnana. From the town travel to the beginning of the mountain pathway leading to the caves. Here we stop under the shade of the olive trees to eat our picnic lunch. After our rest you will discover the ancient stratified rocks visible beside the trail, indicating that at one time the land was underwater. Inside the cave you can see the layers of rock, carbon and the sand layer that has markings from sea animals still apparent.
The walking trip ascends up the mountain and then descends to Agnana. Along the way you will pass a house built directly off the layered rock as you walk the narrow streets and pathways leading down to the central piazza. The piazza is home to a mountain water fountain waiting to quench your thirst with silky fresh cold water. If you prefer, coffee and snacks can be purchased at the local bar.
